In can-end manufacturing, compound plastisol application and
score repair play an integral role in the production of a quality
end product. Nordson’s complete line of dispensing equipment
meets these applications needs with speed and efficiency.
Compound Applications
Compound applications apply material to the
curled area of the can end, which cures into a rubberized gasket.
This compound application creates a reliable seal between the
can end and can body, minimizing the potential for leakage and
preserving the integrity of the product.
Nordson systems use a patented A11A can-end lining
gun to apply the compound material as the end rotates.
The gun features a zero-cavity, needle-and-seat designed nozzle
for fast, clean cut-off. It also incorporates a detent adjust
control for the very fine adjustments required in exacting
end-lining operations.
Proprietary Nordson induction technology can be used to cure
the can ends after the compound material is applied. Nordson
dryers heat only the can end, not the air around it, providing
more energy efficiency at reduced cost. The systems provide
controllable, even heating without water-cooling.
Plastisol Application
The Nordson A11A can-end lining gun can also be used for the
application of plastisol to can ends. The plastisol is typically
applied around a tab top to prevent micro-leakers and provide
a safe edge around the scored area. Similar to compound application,
the end is rotated as the gun applies the plastisol. Once
the plastisol is applied, Nordson ovens can be used to cure
the scored area.
Score Repair
Score repair applications are done on a variety
of food, beverage, sporting goods and automotive product containers
where the easy-open-ends are generally removed from the container
when opened. Typically, material is applied to the scored
area to prevent corrosion.
Based on the material characteristics, Nordson systems provide
score repair using either the patented MEG®
electric spray gun or an A7A
airless spray gun. Material is supplied through an air-driven,
dual-piston CP pumping system accompanied
by high-pressure fluid filters and a fluid heater. Machinery
can be installed to move the dispensing gun or rotate the
can end during material application, depending on specific
process requirements.
The score repair system can also be equipped with the Nordson
CleanSpray®
nozzle cleaning system and the CanWorks®
iTrax™ spray monitor system to enhance overall performance.
